Welcome to Foundations of Inquiry Science – Semester 1

This course is inspired by the inquiry-based science approach found in Bernard Nebel’s Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding (BFSU) Volume 1.

Through hands-on discovery, observation, and careful reasoning, learners build a deep understanding of chemistry, life science, physics, and earth science, focusing on how to think scientifically rather than memorize isolated facts.

This course is independently created and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the author or publisher of Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding.

Live Class Policies
Student Attendance
Regular attendance is strongly encouraged, as each lesson builds upon the last. If your learner misses a session, they can catch up by watching the provided recording of the missed class.

Teacher Attendance & Cancellations
I strive for consistency, but as a working homeschool parent, my schedule can occasionally shift. If I must cancel a live session, I will notify you as soon as possible and ensure the prerecorded lesson is accessible. If I cancel more than two live sessions within a course term, I will offer a prorated refund or a discount on a future class, based on your preference.

Communication Policy
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to me via email ([email protected]). I strive to respond within 24 hours.

Participation & Neurodivergent-Friendly Environment
This is a neurodivergent-friendly space. I encourage open discussion, but I recognize that everyone participates differently. Learners are welcome to engage in the way that feels best for them. This could mean observing quietly, using the "raise hand" button to speak, or contributing via the chat. Please note that non-verbal participation, such as using the chat or classroom reactions, is just as valued as verbal participation.

Camera Policy
For safety and security, all learners must briefly turn on their cameras at the start of class to verify their identity. Once attendance is confirmed, learners are welcome to turn their cameras off for the remainder of the session. If your learner has a specific need regarding this, please reach out to me in advance to make other arrangements.

Microphone Etiquette
We will have time at the beginning of each class for informal social interaction. Once the lesson begins, I ask that all learners remain on mute unless they are called on. To minimize distractions, I will mute microphones from my end if there is persistent background noise or if a learner unmutes repeatedly without being called upon.

Chat Expectations
The chat is a valuable tool for asking questions and clarifying information. Please ensure all contributions are on-topic and respectful. Spamming, excessive use of emojis, or off-topic chatter will result in a warning. Repeated violations may result in the learner being removed from the session, followed by communication with their caregiver.

Behavioral Expectations
I strive to create a safe, respectful, inclusive, and kind environment for everyone. Bullying, discriminatory language, or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated and will result in immediate removal from the class.

Technical Troubleshooting
If your learner experiences technical difficulties (e.g., losing connection), please have them attempt to rejoin the meeting. If they cannot reconnect, please refer to the course recording to catch up on what was missed.
